I had some new internet installed this morning[^1], which means that the last few hours have been spent setting up all of my devices to work on the new network. For most of my devices it’s been a piece of cake, but I’ve got a lot of smart home devices that haven’t taken the change so well. I’ve been reconfiguring smart plugs and disconnecting and reconnecting light bulbs for a few hours (and I’m still not quite done) just to use anything but the big light[^2]
It’s an undisputable fact that anyone that willingly uses the big light is a monster, and I will die on this hill. So to avoid it’s uncomfortable rays of light, I’ve got a house full of lamps; small lamps, big lamps, standing lamps, desk lamps, light strips, you name it. But without smart bulbs and plugs controlling them, I’d spend the first half of my evening running around from lamp to lamp, switching them all on, and then the second half running the route in reverse to switch them all off. I would simply not do this (although I’d still not resort to using the big light because I’m not a monster)
I’ve After spending the best part of the day tinkering with technology (or "wasting my time" as my gf put it); resetting passwords, rebooting routers, and eventually nuking my whole setup, I’ve realised I will go well out of my way to use anything but the big light
[^1] I switched from EE to YouFibre - same download speed, 10X upload speed, £20/m cheaper. It’s early days but so far so good. Shameless shill but here’s a referral code - we’ll both get at least £25 if you switch [^2] You know the one, the big ugly ceiling light in the centre of a room that violently illuminates everything it can when you bash the switch on the wall
