I’ve been slowly buying comic books for a few months now after randomly finding a couple of bagged & boarded issues in a charity shop - X:Men Legends #1, A.X.E.: Eve of Judgment #1 and Daredevil #1
I’ve never really read comics so I’m very out-of-the-loop where lore is considered, but also on the how-the-hell-do-I-actually-start-collecting-comics side too. I’d walk into my local comic book store and feel overwhelmed by the wall of comics, not sure whether I can buy a particular issue because it might be right in the middle of a complex story arc, and questioning why there are so damn many Spider-Mans(?!). This blog post from Mike Haynes helped me wrap my head around this world a bit better, but I still felt like my trips to the comic store, and what I ended up coming out with, were entirely random. Don’t get me wrong, picking up a comic on a whim, based almost entirely on the cover art alone, is fun and exciting, but I really wanted a series that I could sink my teeth into
And I’ve finally found one!
Ultimate X-Men is a new series by Peach Momoko that creates a new generation of X-Men.
From Marvel - Visionary creator PEACH MOMOKO (DEMON DAYS, STAR WARS) creates a new generation of X-Men for an all-new universe! Hisako Ichiki is a teenage girl who just wants to live a normal life - go to school, hang out with her friends, ignore the political strife broiling over after the events of ULTIMATE INVASION - but life has other plans for her. In Japan, urban legends have sprung to life and brought some unusual new powers with them…Meet Armor, Maystorm and a group of new Ultimate X-Men the likes of which you've never seen before!
I’ve been really enjoying Peach’s artwork in Marvel SNAP so I was immediately drawn in when I saw that she was the artist and writer for this new series. I’d already missed the launch of the first couple of issues but luckily was able to pick them up from Forbidden Planet.
I’ve not started reading them yet as I’m still finishing up my Spider-Gwen: Gwenverse series, but if nothing else, I’m excited at the idea of having a new release to look forward to every month or so. It’s nice to finally have a comic series to follow and collect. It actually made me re-download Up Ahead so that I can add delightful little widgets to my home screen showing up when the next issue is released
To coincide with this new-found excitement, I’ve finally added a Comics page to my website, showing my current collection. Full changelog details here
